Overview

Scalper Renko for NinjaTrader 8 — a Renko-style bar type that splits the single brick size into two independent thresholds: a Trend Offset that governs continuation and a Reversal Size that governs turns. Filter chop without dulling the trend.

It also ships with something standard Renko does not have: a backtest-safe price mode where every open, high, low and close is a price that actually traded. Free. Tick-based. Built for NinjaTrader 8.

What Makes It Different

Renko That Doesn't LieSwitch Bar Prices to Close and every O/H/L/C on the chart is a price that genuinely traded. No synthetic opens, no invented fills, no backtest fantasy.
Two Thresholds, Not OneStandard Renko forces continuation and reversal to share one number. Here a small Trend Offset keeps the trend granular while a large Reversal Size ignores counter-trend noise.
Filter Noise Without Adding LagToo many bricks in chop? Raise the Reversal Size and leave the Trend Offset alone. The trend stays as responsive as it was — only the turns get stricter.

Features

Core Behavior

  • Trend Offset (ticks): Continuation threshold. When price moves this far beyond the last brick's close in the direction of the current trend, the bar closes and a new one opens. Small values (1-2) give a fine-grained trend; larger values compress it. Default 1.
  • Reversal Size (ticks): Reversal threshold. Price must travel this far against the current direction before a brick prints the other way. This is your noise filter — raise it to ignore more chop, lower it to react to turns sooner. Default 11.
  • Brick Size (ticks): Purely cosmetic body height of the drawn candle in HighsAndLows mode. It never affects when a bar forms, and has no effect at all in Close mode. Default 5.
  • Bar Prices — HighsAndLows: Classic Renko appearance. Uniform bodies, wicks clipped to the brick, easy on the eye. Built for discretionary chart reading.
  • Bar Prices — Close: Every price on the bar actually traded. The new brick opens at the boundary price that triggered it and the closing brick keeps its true high and low. Built for the Strategy Analyzer, optimization and live automation.
  • Mode Visible At A Glance: The chart tab appends [real] while Close mode is active, so you always know which bars you are looking at.

Practical Notes

  • Built from tick data. Intraday, not time-based — bars form on price movement, so a chart may print several bars in a second or none for an hour.
  • Setting Trend Offset and Reversal Size to the same value reproduces standard Renko behavior, which makes it easy to compare like for like.
  • Keeping Reversal Size a multiple of Trend Offset gives the cleanest, most consistent brick structure.
  • Changing any setting rebuilds the series and bar boundaries will move — re-tune strategies after a change.

How It Compares

How Scalper Renko stacks up against the standard Renko bar type.

Feature Scalper Renko Standard Renko
Continuation vs Reversal ✔ Two independent thresholds ✖ One shared brick size
Backtest-Safe Prices ✔ Close mode — every price traded ✖ Synthetic opens only
True High & Low Preserved ✔ In Close mode ✖ Clipped to the brick
Filter Chop Without Lag ✔ Raise reversal only ✖ Raise brick size, delays everything
Renko Look For Chart Reading ✔ HighsAndLows mode ✔ Standard
Price ✔ Free ✔ Built in

Quick Start

  • 1. Chart → Data Series → Type: ScalperRenko
  • 2. Reading the chart by eye: Brick 5 | Trend 1 | Reversal 11 | HighsAndLows
  • 3. Backtesting a strategy: Brick 5 | Trend 1 | Reversal 11 | Close
  • 4. Too many bricks in chop → raise Reversal Size first, not Trend Offset. Turns detected too late → lower Reversal Size.

Starting points to experiment from — not recommendations. Every instrument and volatility regime needs its own tuning.

Profile Trend Offset Reversal Size
Scalping 1 6
Intraday (default) 1 11
Swing / filter 2 20

FAQ

Why do standard Renko backtests look so good and then fail live?

Because standard Renko bricks open at a synthetic price. The brick is drawn opening a fixed distance back from its close, and that opening price frequently never traded. A backtest engine treats it as a real, fillable level, so your strategy gets entries the market would never have given you. Scalper Renko's Close mode removes that entirely: the new brick opens at the actual boundary price that triggered it, and the closing brick keeps its true high and low.

What is the difference between Close and HighsAndLows?

HighsAndLows is the classic Renko look — uniform bodies, wicks clipped to the brick, clean and easy to read, but built on synthetic prices. Close is the honest one — every open, high, low and close actually traded, so bars look less uniform and that is the point. Use HighsAndLows for discretionary chart reading and Close for the Strategy Analyzer, optimization and live automation.

Will a strategy behave the same in both modes?

No, and it should not. Switching between the two changes the bars themselves, not just their appearance. A strategy tuned on HighsAndLows will not behave identically on Close. Tune and validate on Close — that is the mode that reflects prices the market really printed.

What does Brick Size actually control?

Only the drawn body height of the candle in HighsAndLows mode — the brick opens that many ticks back from its close. It is cosmetic. It never changes when bars form, and it has no effect at all in Close mode. Set it near your Trend Offset for a conventional look, or to 1 for near-doji bodies.

How do I get fewer bars in chop without losing trend detail?

Raise the Reversal Size and leave the Trend Offset alone. That is the whole reason the two are separate. On standard Renko your only lever is the brick size, which filters noise and delays every continuation signal at the same time.

Can I reproduce standard Renko with it?

Yes. Set Trend Offset and Reversal Size to the same value and the bar type behaves like standard Renko. It is a useful baseline when you want to see exactly what the split thresholds are buying you.

Why does volume read slightly high at brick boundaries?

The tick that triggers a boundary is credited to both the closing brick and the new one, so volume-based indicators read a little high at those points. This is deliberate and documented — changing it would shift historical volume on every existing chart.

Is it really free?

Yes. Scalper Renko is a free 2 years license like all our free indicators. Download it, Activate the license, install it, use it on live charts and in the Strategy Analyzer.
